Development of Gaming and the Transformation into Film

Games have always been about transporting the player into a world they are not familiar with or do not think they would ever be involved with for example controlling a augmented soldier from the future fighting aliens in a galactic war or robbing banks and committing everyday crimes not having to face the consequences in the real world or just solving puzzles in a way only a game can give you the player not to mention the pure adrenaline and fear when feeling truly immersed in a horror game as if you were really fearing for your life.

So the question was asked what would then be the result of these unique stories and experiences from games if they were then incorporated or simply moved onto the big screen and the result was there OK films that either miss the best parts of the games and there for is considered a wasted opportunity or something that could be great and for that main reason film producers and fans alike are afraid of movie adaptations because both fear that either the directer will get the movie wrong or that the fans will either be angered at someones adaptation and take on there favorite game the best example for this is halo so many producers have tried but eventually have backed out simply because of fear of not only loosing money but his own career as well might take a huge hit.

But some producers have made movie adaptations they are nothing perfect but because of how hard it is to simply considering making a film but it being successful can only be described as a miracle and here are some film adaptations that not only were successful but were able to KINDA get the aspect and premise right, im basically saying its not Super Mario movie as good as that was people were not expecting something so creative and different they said it was bad because it didn’t follow the game and that’s how the concerns started for game adaptations and are now feared because now if a movie is made peoples expectations so low it makes films like Batman and Robin look like masterpieces with those nipple pieces what were they thinking.

Anyway going off topic back to game adaptations here is my list of the best movie adaptations and are a must watch.

We wanted to do something unique from a narrative standpoint that’s big in scale.” [2]

In January 1997, Constantin Film acquired the rights to the Resident Evil franchise with Alan B. McElroy possibly writing the script.[2] By 2001, Columbia TriStar was in final negotiations to acquire North American distribution rights to Resident Evil and budgeted the movie at $40 million.[3] George A. Romero was hired by Sony and Capcom to direct and write Resident Evil. His script was later rejected and he was ultimately dropped.[4] Capcom producer Yoshiki Okamoto stated that “Romero’s script wasn’t good, so Romero was fired”.[5] Paul W. S. Anderson was then hired by Sony to write a screenplay and in late 2000, Anderson was announced as director and writer.[6] Anderson stated the film would not include any tie-ins with the video game series as “under-performing movie tie-ins are too common and Resident Evil, of all games, deserved a good celluloid representation”.[7] In 2001, Milla Jovovich was cast as Alice, the protagonist of the film.[8]

In the film, the Umbrella Corporation operates a top-secret genetic research facility named The Hive. Located deep beneath Raccoon City, The Hive has been sealed by The Red Queen (the AI that controls the Hive) due to the release of the T-Virus into the facility. The Red Queen kills every living thing in the facility to ensure that the T-Virus doesn’t reach the surface, but the T-Virus reanimates them, transforming the humans into ravenous zombies and the animals into highly aggressive mutants. Alice (Milla Jovovich) was once a security operative working for the Corporation until her memory was wiped by the Red Queen’s nerve gas. As the team attempts to escape The Hive, an Umbrella test subject, a huge monster called the Licker, escapes and pursues the team. When they reach the train that leads them to the exit, the Licker attacks and scratches Matt before Alice can kill it. When they reach the surface, Matt is taken away by Umbrella workers and he eventually transforms into Nemesis. Alice wakes from a coma to a ravaged Raccoon City after a T-Virus outbreak.
